Connaught PSSt. Catharines, Ontario 64 / 230 livres donnés
Nom du directeur ou de la directrice : Kelly Diiorio
Connaught is a busy school in central St. Catharines, and for many students, our library is their main source of literature. In a neighbourhood where finances are often very tight, many families struggle to provide 'extras' like brand new books. Our beloved library books are well used, well loved, and many are in need of replacement. Our only source of additional income for books comes from our annual used book sale, at 25 cents apiece, which raises about $100 (about 10 new books.) Our wonderful teachers frequently buy books out-of-pocket to keep up with the demand for new material.
As an ESL site school, we have the honour to welcome families new to Canada, as well as our local children living in the downtown St. Catharines area. Our principal is a passionate supporter of literacy, and helps encourage our students to embrace a love of reading. This grant would help us add some much needed resources to our library. We love our books, and need your help to continue to promote a love of literacy at Connaught.
Your support has meant so much, the students can't wait to see 'what's in the box' whenever books come in. They frequently stop me in the hall to request a new book they can't wait to read. You have given us the ability to start building up collections of books used in specific subject areas (especially FNMI and LGBTQ books) that were not easily available before, replace much loved (and tattered!) copies, and invest in books we usually would wait to find on sale (Guinness World Record and Lego hardcovers.) Thank you from the staff and students at Connaught!
-Diary of a Wimpy Kid novels
-Bone & Amulet graphic novels
-Guinness World Record books
-Dual language books (Mandarin, Arabic)

People LOVE Connaught! Mrs. Seaburn has been coming every Tuesday and Thursday for 45 years to volunteer in our school library! We couldn't run our library without her or the support of our amazing teacher librarian Mrs. Michel. They are both passionate about reading and their love of books ...
We are an impoverished neighborhood...yet I have never seen a more dedicated staff, parent or student community in terms of their love of books and stories. Indigo's support of our school is beyond words, and their donation of books continues to feed our young children's voracious appetite for ...
My mom always bought us books, new and used. One time she found a series called the Dana Girls. Very like Nancy drew but unique as I was the only kid reading them. I loved them all and finished them quickly. Even my own kids have had the chance to enjoy them as I have always kept them on my shelf.
"Books are for people who wish to be somewhere else".. I believe each child should just get lost into a book. Less technology more books!!!
Reading takes you away from stress of every day. I read before bed to make myself sleepy, and my eyes tired.
Reading stimulates the senses. The smell of a book when you open it, the sight of the words on the pages, the feel of the paper pages. Reading stimulates imagination and broadens horizons and interests.
I'm supporting Connaught Public School because my children go here and they will graduate from here in June. We have grown fond of the school and my children have made many friends here and say they never want to leave. I have watched them grow up so fast and I'm thankful to the teachers for ...
My kids love the Apple Tree farm series, Good Night Construction Site and Mighty Mighty Construction Site.
Charlotte's Web, the first novel I read multiple times as a child. The themes of love and friendship, of getting older and losing a friend made a big impact on me. I reread it every few years, and love sharing it with my students!
Reading takes you places. It gives you a chance to be in the moment and on an adventure at the same time!
It helps kids gain knowledge, grow their imagination, and it’s just fun to do! Every kid should spend time daily with a book, a magazine, or an ebook. The possibilities are endless!
Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. It was a great example of being able to get lost in a book. I was drawn in by the story, and wanted to be able to lead a “wild rumpus “ just like Max.
It’s one of the neediest schools I know. The kids need us. The teachers are so dedicated to helping these children and families.
Reading is so important to me as it is a gateway for so many wonderful learning opportunities. Books offer me the depth of knowledge that I crave about a variety of topics. I love watching that turning-point as students focus a little less on learning to sound out words and become amazed at ...
Reading is important to me because it's relaxing, it takes me away and stretches my brain!
Connaught school is a wonderful school. It is a very friendly environment for children and staff. It has a variety of students from all different parts of the world as well as special needs. Everyone works well together and is very excepting of each other. Connaught is a great place and ...
I love the library at Connaught! It is such an inviting space with big bay windows that kids can read under with the sun shining through. There are books everywhere and the kids enjoy exploring the different sections. Perhaps my favourite thing to see in this library are the kids reading to the ...
This school is full of eager readers who absolutely love books. Books don’t last forever, and the most popular ones sometimes need to be replaced several times a year. This fund helps keep new books, and the most popular titles, in the hands of kids who really love to read.
Harry Potter - these books had such an impact on children, getting them excited and hooked on reading. Dr. Seuss - there’s nothing like them. Silly and funny, a great intro to reading for pleasure. Enemy Pie - a wonderful story about friendship
As former Connaught students and graduates, my siblings and I are proud to support the current generation of Cougars and their love of reading.
