For a number of years, our library has had a $0 budget. The only funding for books was through fundraising, in particular, the Scholastic Book Fair. Our community is very supportive; we successfully run two book fairs every year.
These past three years, our division has put a strong focus on literacy. The teachers and students have been working wholeheartedly and the overall literacy rates at our school have improved a noticeable amount, although we still need to improve more. We have rearranged the library, made good books more accessible, and always have neat things happening in the library. We are encouraging the students to be more excited about reading; and it is working.
Our circulation has literally tripled with the increased focus on literacy. Unfortunately, that also means our books are wearing out three times as fast! Our school has recognized the need to reallocate some funding to purchase books for the library. We have added some graphic novels and discounted non-fiction, a carpet for story time, and participated in the Willow Awards this year, but we have a long way to go to bring the library materials up to an appropriate standard. Over the last couple years, we weeded the non-fiction books from the 1960’s to the 1990's, which brought our average age of collection up to 2004.
Our library’s physical space is quite small, and we are looking at expanding to include the room next door, which will double the size of the library. Now would be perfect timing for our school to be adopted by Indigo, so that we can rejuvenate our library, and help our students continue to become more literate. They deserve it!
Our Favourite Reads are:
1. Diary of a Wimpy Kid series
2. Amulet series
3. Mo Willems books (Pigeon, Elephant and Piggie)
4. Robert Munsch books
5. Raina Telgemeier (Sisters / Smile / Ghosts)
We're at over 360 books, which is double the goal of a book for every student!! Amazing!!! Thanks so much everyone!!!
Great job students! We have been collecting change to change our libraries. We collected $102.75!!! The Grade 8's had the fullest jar, followed by Grade 1, then Grade 5. Grade 6S collected the most money, followed by Grade 8, then Grade 5. Excellent job, students!
There are a lot of great ideas for our dream library, such as a haunted library, a castle with a waterslide, or a multi-roomed library with sunset painted walls. Some other great ideas are attached in the photos.
There are already over 180 books donated for our 180 students!!! Thank you everyone for donating at Regina Chapters!!

The little girl in Red is Best helped me fall in love with reading. I have no idea how, but she made me want to read that book over and over and over!
Way to go students! Great job bringing in spare change to change the library!!!
I am supporting this school because I love seeing the smile on students faces when then are reading. They love the time when they are doing literacy.
The book that had the biggest for me in my adult life is "Love you Forever" by Robert Munsch. For me this book was so important in my role as a mother, and in my role as an educator. A mother's love in unconditional, and there is nobody that loves you more than your own children in my ...
It is the key to knowledge and learning. One can communicate more effectively when one has the ability to read.
The Little House on the Prairie series had the biggest impact on my life. It made me realize how rough and difficult it was for the pioneers, and I appreciate my own life more as a result.
Mrs. Stewart, my Grade 2 teacher, helped me fall in love with reading. She read to the class and we all enjoyed it so much we couldn't wait to read more on our own.
Reading is important because it expands your horizons. It makes you use your imagination. Reading allows you to escape life.
The illustrations are lovely in Bear Snores On, and also in Snow Bear. How Do You Hug a Porcupine is a favourite of all the young children.
I am supporting this school because I have worked there in the past. The staff and students deserve more great books.
Reading is a great way to escape to a different world, to slay dragons, to conjure magic. I enjoy reading to experience the adventure that authors write about.
I am supporting Punnichy Elementary School because the students there need and deserve excellent literature. I believe reading is key to developing knowledge and independence. We need lots of great books to help instill a love for reading!
Reading at any age is great for stress reduction, mental stimulation, for gaining knowledge. Reading is great for kids because it builds vocabulary, improves writing skills, and allows their imagination to soar as they go on amazing adventures with the characters in their books.
Punnichy Elementary has some wonderful students. The more books that they can receive the more opportunity for every student to improve in their reading.
I am supporting this school because it is a small and it has a high number of low income students. These students have a high need for good literature and I am hoping this program will help provide some of it.
The children in this school need extra support and they should get it. They are wonderful kids that deserve a chance to be the best versions of themselves. I enjoy working with them.
Books are important for children to learn. They help you when you are trying to apply for jobs when you are older. Reading is fun and relaxing.
I am supporting this school because I work at this school and my children went to this school. Now that they have children of their own, they are continuing to be avid readers and teaching their children the importance of literacy. I love helping students with literacy. It is so important.
The school is very welcoming and such a positive environment. It is wonderful to see the children grow with the knowledge and support of all the staff.
The students at Punnichy Elementary are amazing! They value reading and learning, they are always willing to help people, and they love to have fun. A lot of reading happens at school. The students look forward to exploring new books, meeting new characters, or finding more stories by a ...
Every school library should have The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base. It's a book you have to keep looking at -- you read the story, then you find clues, figure out more clues, and finally try to solve the case. Students of any age can enjoy it. Other books to have are any by Mo Willems. When ...
