Ecole élémentaire Sainte AnneOttawa, Ontario 683 / 200 livres donnés
Nom du directeur ou de la directrice : Mme Paule Pepin
Sainte Anne is a wonderful school, made up of dedicated staff and awesome students, nestled into the small tight-knit community of Lowertown, Ottawa. This as a school with a mixed population; local francophones with family history in the area, city dwellers who walk and enjoy parks/rivers in the neighborhood, and families who are temporarily taking refuge here after being displaced from their countries of origin.
Every year, children of refugee families come to school at Sainte Anne to settle into their new life in Canada. In less than a year, many are resettled by the government elsewhere in Ottawa. This results in a school with a high turnover of students; many new friendships, but also a constant state of transition. One of the secondary effects of this state of transition is that the school library is depleted regularly. Books are often borrowed and not returned, as families are suddenly relocated when housing becomes available.
Our school population is made up of a mixed socio-economic background, meaning that fundraising via school families just isn't possible. Thus, the library collection is not regularly replenished or updated. The students at Saint Anne are francophone, or French-as-a-second-langage (FSL) speakers. Books in French, and books that would encourage a love of reading in French would greatly benefit these students.
The Adopt a School Program sounds like it would fill a need for Sainte Anne: new books would encourage reading for Canadians and new Canadians alike, it would enable teachers and educators with new resources for their classrooms, and it would promote literacy in French. The students at Sainte Anne are children with great potential, but many need to overcome difficult situations in order to succeed at school. Supporting this community school with books and French literacy resources would allow teachers and educators to support our students in their journeys towards lifelong learning and love of reading.
Note: There are 200 students at Sainte Anne. In 2016/2017 no books were purchased for the school library. This year 2000$ worth of books were purchased. There are currently 900 books in the school library.
