Kenneth D. Taylor School is a K-4 school that opened in 2016 in the community of Evanston. We are the first public elementary school in a community that has been here for over 16 years! Our dedicated teachers and staff have been working towards creating an intentional and thoughtful learning commons space that includes rich literacy materials, as well as, a fully functioning MakerSpace. We have limited funds/budget for purchasing books to enhance our curriculum and support student learning and we need your help!!
Unfortunately, our school did not qualify for the playground grant from the Government of Alberta. Our school was announced months before the government requirements to qualify for the grant, which makes our school one of the only new schools without a playground! The lack of playground in our community is felt well beyond just our school. The nearest playground is too far for students and children in the area to walk to. Due to the lack of playground, the focus of our determined Parent Council is on raising funds for an outdoor play space. The projection for achieving a playground is approximately 3-5 years from now, which means all of our fundraising efforts will go to the playground, and not to other initiatives such as purchasing rich literature for our learning commons!
Our school is focused on ensuring all students are provided opportunities to learn and enhance their literacy and numeracy skills. With very specific goals set out to lessen gaps within learning, our school is currently lacking enough rich literature to support teaching and student learning. This year, we expanded to include students in grade 4 within our school. At this point in time, we severely lack high interest student reading material to support this age group! We currently do not have enough books to enable every child in the school to take home two a week! The majority of our teachers are having to purchase their own books or borrow from the public library to enhance their classroom engagement and to help develop student understanding of curricular objectives.
We want to be able to provide students with rich literature linked to curricular objectives. We want students to expose students to different types of literature to peak their interests. We want students to want to read and be life long learners. We want students to leave our school with the literacy skills to empower them to make a difference in an ever-changing world. We cannot do this without getting books in the hands of children and we need your help to do this!! With the support of the Adopt a School program with Indigo, we hope to be able to achieve the above and that our students will LOVE READING!
We look forward to hearing from you and hope we can create a partnership with the focus of love for reading!

Great opportunity to support the school where I work
As a little girl growing up, my parents always spent time reading stories to my sister and I before bed. Now as an adult with my own children I realize the importance of reading to children is. I am a volunteer for Wee Reads through Calgary Reads and have spent the last few years volunteering ...
