Nom du directeur ou de la directrice : Lorrie Peterson A letter by one of our teachers,
To whom it may concern,
“Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.”(V. Nazarian) I am a grade one teacher at Jack Hulland Elementary school in the Yukon, and it is my job to open doors for children: in grade one, this centers around reading.
Books and inspiring a love of them, is the foundation of my teaching. This is made difficult, when we have very limited budgets. Most of the reading material in my room is quite dated. Many of the books are dog-eared, tattered and well-loved. Sitting underneath my classroom window is a bin labeled “Book Hospital”. Every day, children carefully deposit an aged and torn book in need of mending. We love our books, and care for them, but with generations of little hands turning the pages, they get worn out and battered.
When you walk into the room, the first thing you see is our classroom library. Books line the shelves, enticing readers into new and exciting worlds. When students are done an activity, or finished their lunch, or are need of a little time to themselves, they head to the library. Even those students struggling with behaviours, or having a bad day seek out the comfort of the library. Many of the books on these shelves have been purchased by myself, or are from my daughter’s old bookshelf.
In order to fully inspire a newer generation of readers, we have to compete with television, digital media and a world of electronic gizmos and gadgets. For that reason, turning kids onto reading has become so much harder.
We would love the opportunity to purchase some new material with the available funding. What a wonderful opportunity to turn another generation of children into readers, to open doors, and let in the light.
