Nom du directeur ou de la directrice : Carolyn Sossi-Grant Garthwood Park has a very diverse group of students from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. As a small school and with a yearly budget of $2000.00 or roughly $5.00 per student to spend yearly limits our purchasing ability. It is a challenge for us to be able to purchase books to replace lost or damaged books let alone to purchase books to significantly update and expand current topics/subject/interests within our stacks both in regards to fiction texts and non-fiction texts. Often it becomes a choice of what to purchase due to the cost of books. This often becomes frustrating when you have a child that has discovered a particular series of books or has just learned how to read and has become passionate about reading. As a Teacher-Librarian this inhibits your ability to continue to nurture that new found love of reading.

At Garthwood Park many of our students only have our school library in which to get books to read from. Many of our families do not have any “extra” money at the end of the week to use towards the purchase of other “niceties” such as a new books. Our school is their bookstore and local library. It would be a shame not to be able to encourage, inspire and promote reading and the exploration of new ideas, concepts, and learning due to a lack of books. Recently our library underwent a book weeding. During this time hundreds of books were pulled from our shelves due to mould, significant water damage and out of date books. Unfortunately, we are unable to replace those books in a timely manner with our current budget. It will take many years for us to be able to replace just those books and that would also mean the excluding of the acquisition of other reading materials such as magazines, digital libraries and The Forest of Reading might have to either be put off altogether or to be a very slow process. Ultimately it is our students that suffer due to our budgetary constraints.

So to answer the question “Why does your school need new books?” We need new books in order to continue to inspire, explore, develop, and nurture our students. We want to be able to support our students in as many ways as possible and through as many options as possible. A mind can only grow when it has something to grow on and a child can only learn when they have something to learn from.
