Nom du directeur ou de la directrice : James Benn A new S.T.E.A.M. lab has been created and shares the same space as the library, but, at the moment they feel like two separate spaces. Ideally, we want the library's collection to complement the learning going on in the lab by adding to our books on technology, robotics, coding, and Lego building. This would help us turn the space in to a learning commons - a direction many school libraries are heading in. While Allion has some up-to-date literature on these subjects, much of the non-fiction collection is at least 15 years old and updating it on a limited budget is a slow process. Of course we also want to have books that complement the learning going on in classrooms as well, which is why the broader goal would be to update the entire NF collection in an effort to better reflect what is being taught by the teachers.

In addition to updating the Non-Fiction section, it is important to not forget fiction books to read for pleasure. The graphic novel collection at Allion is small, but well-borrowed. An effort has been made this year to expand the offerings, but there is still a lot of room for growth. Graphic novels are great for reluctant readers, especially those in grades 3 and up who feel they have outgrown picture books, but are intimidated by the prospect of a novel. Having seen firsthand their popularity and excitement they generate, it would be amazing to be able to add to the collection.

Livres préférés The students at Allion have a lot of love for fiction, be it graphic novels, picture books, or chapter books.

Here are their top five favourite books, in no particular order:

1. Phoebe and Her Unicorn series by Dana Simpson. All seven titles in this series are continually on loan, with hold requests coming in every week. They like everything about them - the fun plots, the art, and of course, the unicorn!

2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney - Still going strong after all these years. The students will take whatever volume is available, even if it is out of order or they have read it before.

3. Les Dragouilles by Maxime Cyr - Everyone loves these, and it's great to see even reluctant readers grabbing them off the shelf.

4. Tintin by Hergé - These will always be popular. Both English and French titles are constantly being taken out. The copies we have are well-worn and well-loved!

5. Anything by Robert Munsch - While there is no consensus on which title is the favourite, there is no denying the love for all things Munsch. The students don't even need to ask where to find them anymore; their location is common knowledge.
