Literacy is a major part of school and academics. We try to encourage students to read as much as possible and try to teach them how to love reading and the benefits that come along with it.
However, over the last couple years, the students' use of our school library has been decreasing drastically, almost to the point where only 1 or 2 books are being checked out a month. When asking students why they don't use the library, they say the books are old, and outdated, and the newer themes/topics/characters are not there, and as a teacher I agree.
Reading old books that have been around for years (and its obvious when you look at them) is not very appealing to students. In order to have students engaged in reading, we need to be able to provide them with the most popular books that are out there; something that will catch their attention, something that will get them to WANT to read again.
Due to the old and outdated books in our library, the teachers don't even use it. We buy our own books out of our own money and use in the classroom. And for teachers this is costly and not always possible.
I believe if we can get a new collection of books for our library, then we will be able to get our students reading again. We will be able to get our students to enjoy looking at books. And, teachers and parents will also begin to show their love of books by using the library.
Also, being in a small community, with a small school, the funds is not always available for the purchase of new materials and books.
