Nom du directeur ou de la directrice : Carla Orr Westview is an economically and ethnically diverse North Vancouver school. Many of our students belong to lower-income, First Nations or immigrant families. While our library does receive some money from the school, the funding available cannot meet our growing needs. Our library collection primarily contains used books donated by community families or retired teachers, and materials discarded from schools that were closed as long ago as 2004. As a result, most of our books are old and visually unappealing, and the collection is small and haphazard. We are missing many core staples, and most of our fiction series are incomplete. Our nonfiction collection is outdated, incomplete and not adequate to support the new British Columbia curriculum. For example, many of our resources to support understandings in computer technology, natural resources, world cultures and healthy living date back to the 1980s or 1990s. We do not have the money we need to develop our collection to support the research and exploration of our students and teachers.

In recent years we have augmented our collection with books purchased through Scholastic Book Fairs and donations from the Parent Advisory Council, but parents in our community are only able to provide limited support. The books we have bought are so well-loved that they are already showing wear and tear.

We are working towards making our library a gathering place for a variety of community events and a diversity of learning experiences. By making our library a gathering place, we hope to meet the current curricular goals of our teachers and to provide access to high-quality books for all our students. This includes both those who do not have access to many books in their homes and our avid readers who are clamoring for more. Our students are bright, curious, and full of wonderings. Our goal is to help them develop a love of reading and lifelong learning.
