One of my earliest memories of my childhood was when I would find a great book, find a comfy spot to sit, and get lost in the pages of an exciting story. My grandparents had an entire shelf of blue hard-cover Hardy Boys stories that my uncles had read growing up. I loved the adventures of Joe and Frank Hardy...and the cliff-hangers at the end of each chapter kept me glued to the book. I want all our students to find this level of joy and engagement in reading. Being able to open a book and escape to a world of mystery, action, drama, or comedy is a great ability that all children (and adults) should get to enjoy on a regular basis.
