My grandmother was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse. She had a love and reverence for books which she passed to every member of our family. When my sister and I were little we would help her do her weekly shopping and our reward was a book. The grocery store had a program to earn children's encyclopedias which was my book of choice. I would go home and pore over my new book. My grandmother taught me to learn a new word every day and to practice that word in conversation. As a child I read every single day and have continued that into adulthood.

Now we read to our grandchildren and it is one of our favorite activities. We snuggle on the couch and read and read, just like my grandmother and my parents did with my sister and I and we did with our daughter.
