Growing up with an elementary school teacher for a mother, books in our house were a sacred commodity. Never to be disrespected, purposely torn or damaged, or thrown out. Of the many books found in our house one, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. A book given to me as a gift from my eldest sister, The Ballad of the Pirate Queens by Jane Yolen. Twenty years later, you can still find it on my bookshelf; spine cracked, pages bent and stained as evidence of the countless times it had been read. I can still remember the beautiful oil paintings that illustrated the lives of the notorious pirate queens, Anne Bony and Mary Reade during their time aboard their ship, the Vanity. For me this story represented an escape and a life of great adventure and possibility. The chorus will forever be engrained in my mind as well as the vividness of my memories reading it “And silver the coins, and silver the moon, and silver the waves upon the sea, when the pirate ship comes sailing in, that gallant Vanity”.
